A month or so ago, the computer I use for playing games decided to stop booting. After a few days of troubleshooting, I just gave up. The only problem is that the gaming computer doubled as my Plex file server. The case had 15 hard drives in it, accounting for close to 30TB worth of raw storage space. After Folder/File duplication with drivepool, I had a good 5-7TB of free space. I was pretty happy with this. Prior to this, I had been using a few CineRAID enclosures. After pulling these out of storage, dealing with a broken/faulty power brick my new Drivepool has about 26TB of Raw storage. This is pretty close to what the original setup had, so all well and good.
I started to look at what I had stored on my drive pool as I was copying files off the smaller drives that were no longer included in the new drivepool. It appears that I suck at any real organizational skills. The main question I had for myself is “Why do I have almost 2TB worth of photos?” After a deep dive into the issue, I can only say that I had 3, 4, 5, or more copies of any one photo stored in folders named backups, with backup folders in those backup folders, nested 3 or 4 layers deep.
It has been close to a week since I started to try and make sense of this mess. I have deleted close to 1TB worth of duplicate pictures, pictures of food, and pictures of black or white voids. I still have a long way to go. I have found a few goodies tho.
